The coral reefs are what literally sustain the islands of the Lakshadweep. It maintains the ecosystem, sustains the marine life, and preserves the structural integrity of the islands. The mining of corals harms the very existence of the islands which can be affected by climate change. Dredging of the channels, unsustainable fishing systems, and culture of souvenir collection by tourists all lead to its destruction irreparably.
